Dangerous goods
Before you fly, you must ensure your baggage and its contents conform with Dangerous Goods regulations and do not pose a risk to safety onboard the aircraft. All Dangerous Goods must be declared at check-in, where staff will verify that carriage requirements have been met.
Before travel, please review the list of Dangerous Goods that are permitted and not permitted for travel onboard Airnorth aircraft. If you are unsure if a product is considered a Dangerous Good please email compliance@airnorth.com.au with details of the item(s).
WHAT ARE DANGEROUS GOODS?
Dangerous Goods are articles or substances, which could pose an immediate threat to aircraft or passenger safety if not carried or packaged in the appropriate manner. The carriage of Dangerous Goods on Airnorth aircraft are governed by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations, and Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Dangerous Goods Regulations.
DANGEROUS GOODS PERMITTED FOR CARRIAGE ON AIRNORTH AIRCRAFT
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
- For sporting or home use
- The total net quantity of aerosols, toiletries and medicinal articles must not exceed 2kg or 2L
- The net quantity of each single article must not exceed 0.5kg or 0.5L
- The valve is to be protected by a cap or other mechanism to prevent inadvertent release of contents
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
Carriage Requirements:
- Must be in retail packaging
- Maximum net quantity 5L per person
- Alcohol must not exceed 70%
For international flights, all liquid, aerosol and gel (LAGs) must not exceed 100ml per item when carried in carry-on luggage.

- Permitted in checked baggage only
- Firearm Checklist must be completed and presented at check-in
Carriage Requirements:
- A current firearms licence, permit or enforcement agency identification must be produced at check-in
- Must not exceed 5kg gross weight per passenger
- Multiple passenger allowances cannot be combined, or packed in one bag
- Must be securely packed (individually separated within a container)
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
- Allowance of one per passenger
- Containing one non-flammable gas cylinder (Div 2.2)
- Airbags must be fitted with pressure relief valves
- Pyrotechnic trigger does not contain more than 200mg of explosives (1.4S)
- Must be packed to prevent accidental activation
Baggage fitted with non-removable lithium batteries or powerbanks are forbidden. Baggage fitted with removable batteries:
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
Note: Baggage is only permitted as checked baggage on the condition that all batteries are removed and carried as carry-on baggage. Carriage Requirements:
- Lithium batteries or lithium powerbanks, other than button cells, must be removed from the bag.
- Batteries and powerbanks must be carried in accordance with conditions specified for Lithium Batteries: spare/loose
No more than 20 spare batteries in total, for personal use, are permitted per passenger. All other battery restrictions still apply e.g. no more than two spare lithium batteries exceeding 100Wh and up to 160Wh are permitted and forms part of the total carried. Lithium batteries exceeding 160Wh must be consigned as freight. A combination of batteries may be carried e.g. 10 x 98Wh lithium ion + 2 x 138Wh lithium ion + 2 x 12V & 98Wh non-spillable + 6 x alkaline. To determine the Watt hour (Wh) rating of a battery, use:Volts (V) x Amp hours (Ah) = Watt hour (Wh) All spare batteries and powerbanks are permitted for carry-on baggage only.
Lithium ion (rechargeable) not more than 100Wh, including powerbanks
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only

- All terminals must be protected from short circuiting e.g. retail packaging, taped, plastic bags etc.
Lithium ion (rechargeable) exceeding 100Wh and up to 160Wh, including powerbanks
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- Up to two spares per passenger only.
- All terminals must be protected from short circuiting e.g. retail packaging, taped, plastic bags etc.
Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) not exceeding 2g of lithium metal
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- All terminals must be protected from short circuiting e.g. retail packaging, taped, plastic bags etc.
Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) exceeding 2g and up to 8g of lithium metal for portable medical electronic devices only
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- Up to two spares per passenger only
- All terminals must be protected from short circuiting e.g. retail packaging, taped, plastic bags etc.
Non-spillable batteries up to 12V and 100Wh e.g. gel cell, dry cell, sealed lead acid (SLA), valve regulated lead acid (VRLA).
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- Up to two spares per passenger only
- All terminals must be protected from short circuiting e.g. retail packaging, taped, plastic bags etc.
Other batteries: Alkaline, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), Nickel Cadium (Nicad) etc.
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- All terminals must be protected from short circuiting e.g. retail packaging, taped, plastic bags etc.
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as checked baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- Must be new or unused, or;
- Flushed in accordance with the Fuel Flushing Declaration form which must be presented at check-in
- All fuel tanks will be fuel containers will be presented for inspection upon check-in. If any fuel or fuel smells are detected, the item will be denied carriage.
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
- Up to 2.5kg per passenger
- Container/package must be ventilated to permit the release of CO2 gas, e.g. a single small hole
- ‘DRY ICE’ label must be clearly visible on container/package
- If carried in checked baggage, the weight of dry ice must be labelled
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only)
- The onboard use and charging of these devices is not permitted
- Devices containing batteries must be individually protected to prevent accidental activation
No more than 15 lithium battery powered portable electrical devices in total, for personal use, are permitted per passenger. Lithium batteries exceeding 160Wh must be consigned as freight. To determine the Watt hour (Wh) rating of a battery, use: Volts (V) x Amp hours (Ah) = Watt hour (Wh)
Lithium ion (rechargeable) not more than 100Wh and Lithium Metal (non-rechargeable) containing up to 2g of lithium metal
Example: Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, game consoles, most CPAPs, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, nebulisers etc. (excludes power tools)

- Permitted as carry-on baggage
Carriage Requirements:
- In checked baggage, the device must be OFF e.g. laptop not in sleep mode, etc.
- The ON/OFF switch must be protected to prevent turning on e.g. taped over
- The device must be protected from damage
Lithium metal batteries (non-rechargeable) exceeding 2g and up to 8g of lithium metal in portable medical devices/equipment only
Example: Defibrillator
- Airline approval required
- Permitted in carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked-baggage
Carriage Requirements:
- If in checked baggage, the device must be OFF
- The ON/OFF switch must be protected from turning on e.g. taped over
- The device must be protected from damage
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
- The ON/OFF switch must be protected to prevent turning on e.g. taped over; or
- The battery is disconnected, and the terminals protected e.g. in retail packaging, taped, plastic bag etc.
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
- Up to 200ml of liquid fuel, 200g for solids or 120ml for liquified gas only
- Permitted as checked baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- A Firearm Checklist must be completed prior to arrival at and produced on arrival at check-in
- All carriage requirements will be verified by check-in staff
- Passengers must produce a current firearms licence, permit or enforcement agency identification
- The firearm(s) must be rendered inoperable e.g. bolt
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
Carriage Requirements:
- Only one item per passenger
- The safety device must be securely fitted over the heating element
- Gas refills for the device are not permitted for carriage
Note: Hair curlers must not be used on board the aircraft at any time.
Such as underwater torches and soldering ions.

- Permitted as checked baggage
Carriage Requirements: The battery must:
- Be removed from the item and be taken as carry-on baggage
- Have the terminals protected from short circuiting e.g. taped, plastic bag, etc.
- Be protected from damage e.g. individually carried in a protective pouch
Note: The device (minus the battery) can be carried in carry-on or checked baggage.
Lighters (cigarette) or safety matches
- Permitted on one’s person only
Carriage Requirements:
- Only one item permitted per passenger for personal use only
- Lighter must not contain unabsorbed liquid fuel, other than liquified gas
Note: Strike anywhere matches, blue flame or cigar lighters, or lighters powered by a lithium battery without a safety cap or means of protection against unintentional activation are forbidden.
All mobility aid’s travel as checked-baggage. All removable and spare batteries, unless otherwise stated, must travel as carry-on baggage.

Lithium Ion Battery easily removed from a Mobility Aid
The battery is easily removed from the aid e.g. not enclosed/covered by panels that require unscrewing etc.
- Airline approval required
Carriage Requirements:
- Battery/batteries must be removed from the mobility aid
- If the aid requires one battery, the Wh rating can exceed 300Wh but carriage is only permitted within Australia
- If he aid uses two batteries, each battery must not exceeded 160Wh each
- All terminals must be protected e.g. taped etc.
- Each battery must be individually contained in a protective pouch/bag
Spare Lithium Ion Batteries:
- A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare lithium ion battery not exceeding 300Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160Wh
Lithium Ion Battery not easily removed from a Mobility Aid
The battery is enclosed/covered e.g. by panels that are screwed in place, etc.
- Airline approval is required
Carriage Requirements:
- Battery must remain securely attached to the aid with terminals protected
- If available, the aid’s freewheel mode must be activated
- No Watt-hour (Wh) restrictions apply
Spare Lithium Ion Batteries:
- A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare lithium ion battery not exceeding 300Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160 Wh
Non-Spillable Battery easily removed from the Mobility Aid
The battery is easily removed from the aid e.g. not enclosed/covered by panels that require unscrewing etc.
- Airline approval is required
Carriage Requirements:
- The battery(s) must be removed from the mobility aid
- The removed battery must be packed in a strong rigid container with the terminals protected
Spare Non-Spillable Batteries:
- One spare battery only permitted when packed in a strong rigid container.
- Only permitted to travel with a Mobility Aid
Non-Spillable Battery not easily removed from the Mobility Aid
The battery is enclosed/covered e.g. by panels that are screwed in place, etc.
- Airline approval is required
Carriage Requirements:
- Battery must remain securely attached to the aid with the terminals protected
- If available, the aid’s freewheel mode must be activated
Spare Non-Spillable Batteries:
- One spare battery only permitted when packed in a strong rigid container.
- Only permitted to travel with a Mobility Aid
Spillable Battery enclosed in a Mobility Aid
- Airline approval required
Carriage Requirements: Where the Mobility Aid is loaded, stowed, secured and unloaded in an upright position:
- The battery must remain securely attached to the aid with the terminals protected
- The Mobility Aid must be turned OFF
- The ON/OFF switch must be protected from turning ON
- If available, the freewheel mode must be engaged
If the Mobility Aid cannot be loaded, stowed, secured and unloaded in an upright position, the passenger must ensure the battery is removed from the aid. The battery must then be:
- Carried as checked baggage only
- Packed Upright in a leak-tight strong rigid container with the terminals protected
- Labelled with:
- “BATTERY, WET. WITH WHEELCHAIR” or “BATTERY, WET, WITH MOBILITY AID”
- “Corrosive” label
- “Package Orientation” label
- Airline Approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
- Only BOC, Air Liquide or SupaGas cylinders are permitted
- Only ‘C’ size cylinders or less (A, B) are permitted
- Each cylinder must not exceed 5kg gross weight (commonly a ‘C’ size)
- Cylinders must be protected from damage, e.g. padded bag etc.
The carriage of a battery-operated power tool is only permitted in accordance with one of the following methods:
- The battery remains attached to the tool and is carried in checked baggage
- The battery is removed and carried in carry-on baggage and the tool is carried in checked-baggage

- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- The battery must remain attached to the tool
- The ON/OFF switch must be protected from turning on, e.g. taped
- The tool must be contained in either a hard/moulded case or a sturdy box unable to move
- Only one tool per case/box
Note: Spare batteries are not permitted in either the case or box containing the tool
Lithium ion batteries not more than 100Wh removed from the tool (rechargeable)
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- The battery must be removed from the tool
- The tool (minus the battery) must be carried in checked baggage only

Spare and Removed Lithium Ion Batteries not more than 100Wh
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- All terminals must be protected from short circuiting e.g. retail packaging, taped, plastic bags, etc.
Lithium ion battery exceeding 100Wh and up to 160Wh attached to the tool (rechargeable)
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- The battery must remain attached to the tool
- The ON/OFF switch must be protected from turning on, e.g. taped
- The tool must be contained in either a hard/moulded case or a sturdy box unable to move
- Only one tool per case/box
Lithium ion battery exceeding 100Wh and up to 160Wh removed from the tool (rechargeable)
- Permitted as carry-on baggage only
Carriage Requirements:
- The battery must be removed from the tool
- The tool (minus the battery) must be carried in checked baggage only
Note: Spare batteries are not permitted in either the case or box containing the tool
- Permitted as checked baggage only
- The regulator must remain open
- The pressure indication gauge must not exceed 200kPa (29PSI)
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as carry-on baggage
- Permitted as checked baggage
Carriage Requirements:
- Up to two (2) self-inlfating safety devices permitted per passenger
- Two fitted and up to two spare CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) or non-flammable gas cartridges are permitted per device
- Permitted as checked baggage only
- Only one permitted per passenger
- Must be for personal use
- Must be contained in a protective case
- Airline approval required
- Permitted as checked baggage only
- Only permitted to be carried by a representative of a government weather bureau or similar official agency
- Identification must be sighted
- Must be sealed in a leak proof and puncture resistant bag. Must then be contained in a strong outer packaging.
DANGEROUS GOODS NOT PERMITTED FOR CARRIAGE ON AIRNORTH AIRCRAFT
Some Dangerous Goods are prohibited for carriage by passengers and must not be carried on Airnorth aircraft in carry on or checked baggage:

Dangerous Goods that are not permitted as passenger baggage may be suitable for carriage as freight. Please contact Airnorth for further information.

To request an approval for the carriage of Dangerous Goods contact the Airnorth Safety and Compliance department at compliance@airnorth.com.au. Requests must be made no later than 72 hours prior to travel.
