No more than 20 spare batteries in total, for personal use, are permitted per passenger. All other battery restrictions still apply e.g. no more than two spare lithium batteries exceeding 100Wh and up to 160Wh are permitted and forms part of the total carried. Lithium batteries exceeding 160Wh must be consigned as freight. A combination of batteries may be carried e.g. 10 x 98Wh lithium ion + 2 x 138Wh lithium ion + 2 x 12V & 98Wh non-spillable + 6 x alkaline. Note: Strike anywhere matches, blue flame or cigar lighters, or lighters powered by a lithium battery without a safety cap or means of protection against unintentional activation are forbidden.

All mobility aid’s travel as checked-baggage. All removable and spare batteries, unless otherwise stated, must travel as carry-on baggage.

Lithium Ion Battery easily removed from a Mobility Aid

The battery is easily removed from the aid e.g. not enclosed/covered by panels that require unscrewing etc.

Carriage Requirements:

• Battery/batteries must be removed from the mobility aid
• If the aid requires one battery, the Wh rating can exceed 300Wh but carriage is only permitted within Australia
• If he aid uses two batteries, each battery must not exceeded 160Wh each
• All terminals must be protected e.g. taped etc.
• Each battery must be individually contained in a protective pouch/bag

Spare Lithium Ion Batteries:

• A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare lithium ion battery not exceeding 300Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160Wh

Lithium Ion Battery not easily removed from a Mobility Aid

The battery is enclosed/covered e.g. by panels that are screwed in place, etc.

• Airline approval is required

Carriage Requirements:

• Battery must remain securely attached to the aid with terminals protected
• If available, the aid’s freewheel mode must be activated
• No Watt-hour (Wh) restrictions apply

Spare Lithium Ion Batteries:

• A passenger may carry a maximum of one spare lithium ion battery not exceeding 300Wh or two spare batteries each not exceeding 160 Wh

Non-Spillable Battery easily removed from the Mobility Aid

The battery is easily removed from the aid e.g. not enclosed/covered by panels that require unscrewing etc.

Carriage Requirements: Where the Mobility Aid is loaded, stowed, secured and unloaded in an upright position:

• The battery must remain securely attached to the aid with the terminals protected
• The Mobility Aid must be turned OFF
• The ON/OFF switch must be protected from turning ON
• If available, the freewheel mode must be engaged

If the Mobility Aid cannot be loaded, stowed, secured and unloaded in an upright position, the passenger must ensure the battery is removed from the aid. The battery must then be:

• Carried as checked baggage only
• Packed Upright in a leak-tight strong rigid container with the terminals protected
• Labelled with:
• “BATTERY, WET. WITH WHEELCHAIR” or “BATTERY, WET, WITH MOBILITY AID”
• “Corrosive” label
• “Package Orientation” label

Oxygen cylinders must be for personal medical use only or carried by medically trained persons.

Carriage Requirements:

• Only BOC, Air Liquide or SupaGas cylinders are permitted
• Only ‘C’ size cylinders or less (A, B) are permitted
• Each cylinder must not exceed 5kg gross weight (commonly a ‘C’ size)
• Cylinders must be protected from damage, e.g. padded bag etc.

The carriage of a battery-operated power tool is only permitted in accordance with one of the following methods:

• The battery remains attached to the tool and is carried in checked baggage
• The battery is removed and carried in carry-on baggage and the tool is carried in checked-baggage
